  19. ResExpress (aka ResX) is a resource manager and editor in a DA.  See feature
  20. list below for an overview.  ResExpress was designed to handle simple
  21. resource management tasks that can get complex in ResEdit.  ResX
  22. is not intended to replace ResEdit.  For non-developers, ResX makes
  23. many tasks easier to do than with ResEdit, particularly copying resources. 
  24. For a developer, ResX makes a terrific supplement to ResEdit.

  27. Version 1.0.1 fixes several bugs that caused occasional crashes, particularly
  28. on the Quadra.

  30. Externals and Views can now be installed _without_ the ResExpress DA 
  31. installed directly on the Apple Menu in System 7.

  40. editor packages.  Load these packages from the Externals->Install... menu.   
  41. Or, you can select the packages in the Externals folder and dubl-click.  All 
  42. selected packages will be installed.

  48. Feature List:
  49. • Copy resources 2 to 3 times faster than ResEdit.
  50. • Change resource ID, Name, and attributes.
  51. • Change a resources type. (such as ICON to MYIC) 
  52. • Copy and Paste any number of resources to and from the clipboard.
  53. • Get File information and attributes (click on the filename)
  54. • Rename or Delete a file.

  70. Primary features:
  71. • ResX edit and view features are user installable code resources (like
  72.   Hypercard XCMD's).  This gives ResX the potential to be a full blown 
  73.   editor and allows other developers to write their own editors.

  75. • There are two types of external code resources, ResX Views (RXVW) and
  76.   ResX Externals (RXXT).  The difference is that RXVW's apply to a particular
  77.   type of resource such as a menu or icon editor where RXXT's apply to
  78.   any type of resource such as a hex editor or resource duplicator.  RXXT's
  79.   are automactically installed in the "Externals" menu and RXVW's will
  80.   automatically hilite the "View" button if a code resource exists for the
  81.   current resource type selected.

  84. How to use ResX:
  85.  
  86. ResX has similar operations to Font/DA Mover so I'm only going to hilite 
  87. features that are not very obvious.

  90. Option key stuff:
  91. • While copying resources, an alert will appear if there are already    
  92.   resources of the same type and ID's.  You will be asked if you want to 
  93.   replace those resources.  If you hold down the option when clicking on Copy, 
  94.   the alert will not appear.  The option key also applies if you have "Copy" 
  95.   defined as the double click.
  96.  
  97. • When copying a resource to the clipboard, it is possible to concatenate the 
  98.    resources to the clipboard rather than replacing the contents of the 
  99.    clipboard. Example:  If you want to copy 3 DLOG's to the clipboard AND 3       
  100.    DITL's, you can first copy the DLOG's to the clipboard (using the Copy item 
  101.    under the Edit menu), and then hold down the option key while copying the 3 
  102.    DITL's.  The contents of the clipboard will contain 3 DLOG's and 3 DITL's.

  104. • Never try to teach a pig to sing.  It wastes time and annoys the pig.

  106. • An alert will appear any time you remove resources.  The alert will not
  107.   appear if holding down the option key when clicking on Remove.  The option 
  108.   key also applies if you have "Remove" defined as the double click.

  110. • When doing "Get Info" on a selection of resources, you can hold down the
  111.    option key while clicking on Cancel to stop viewing the rest of the 
  112.    selection.

  114. • When doing a "View" on selection, hold down the option key to cancel 
  115.    viewing the rest of the selection.

  117. • To uninstall a Favorite File from the menu, hold down the option key while
  118.   selecting the file from the FF menu.

  120. • To uninstall an External, hold down the option key while selecting the
  121.    external from the External menu.

  126. Command-Period stuff:
  127. • When copying or removing a selection of resources, hold down command - . 
  128.    to stop copying or removing the remaining selection.

  131. Command-Space Bar:
  132. • Command-Space Bar will move the ResX window to the bottom of the 
  133.    screen leaving only the title bar exposed.  Command-Space Bar again will 
  134.    move the window to it's previous location.

  137. General info:
  138.  
  139. • If you open a file that is already open, such as the System or an 
  140.   application that is currently running, be very careful.  Only do this if
  141.   you know what your doing or else be prepared for a bomb or possibly
  142.   corrupting the file.  You will be alerted that a file is already open.  When 
  143.   closing the file in ResX, it will not physically close the file.

  145.   If you have a file that is already open and you want to physically close
  146.   the file, hold down the option key while clicking on the Close button.
  147.   This is nice to use when you are trying to open a file in a text editor but
  148.   get an error that the file is open.  Or when trying to run an application
  149.   but get an error that the file is busy but it really shouldn't be.
  150.   This feature will allow you to force close the file so that it is not
  151.   necessary to reboot.

  153. • Repeat Last Copy on the menu allows re-copying the last single resource
  154.   that was performed.  This is great for developers who write externals
  155.   and need to constantly move their external to the destination file
  156.   each time it is recompiled.

  158. • Information on a file can be obtained by clicking on the file name on
  159.   the lower part of the window just above the Close button.  This gives you 
  160.   the ability to change file attributes, file type and creator, and rename 
  161.   and delete.  The full path of the file is also given.
  162.  
  163. • You can define the function of double-clicking on an item in one of the
  164.    lists via the DoubeClick popup menu in the center of the screen.  
  165.  
  166. • I bet the reason the police keep people away from plane crash sites is
  167.    so that nobody lays down in the crash stuff and then pretends to wake
  168.    up exclaiming, "Wow!  What was THAT!?"
